Greenhouse gases

Image of heavy trafficBurning fossil fuel is the major source of greenhouse gases. We see private automobiles as one of the most visible sources and indeed they account for about 20% of emissions into the atmosphere. Driving responsibly and using efficient vehicles is a necessary step but there is another source of greenhouse gas with a greater impact.

The energy used in the average home can be responsible for more than twice the greenhouse gas emissions of personal automobiles. That is because electricity generation accounted for the largest share of carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel combustion, approximately 41 percent in 2005. Certainly other sources, industries, trains, airplanes, waste disposal contribute to the problem but using less energy at home helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. That helps to protect our environment from the risks of global climate change.

Global climate change

Global climate change is a reality that is having an ever increasing impact on the way other species and humans live. Eleven of the last twelve years rank among the 12 warmest years on record (since 1850), with the warmest two years being 1998 and 2005.

There are other factors contributing to climate change or global warming. Changing land use, for example, from agricultural to paved cities has an impact on climate change. These factors are being studied at state and national levels but clearly this is a time for action.

Making a simple change

We need to do something and making a simple change is without question an excellent starting point. Changing one light bulb will make a difference in the impact we have on our environment. Empowering our children to be part of that change will offer even greater rewards over their lifetime. Making a change now will help ensure the quality of life they will enjoy. Your fundraiser can achieve a number of goals.
